What is 'Woke' and is it coming back? - Marinos Maragos

**What is 'Woke' and is it coming back?** Donald Trump famously said that "woke" is thrown around so much, yet no one actually knows what it is. In this presentation, we will begin with a categorical definition of *what is* woke, as well as how the post WW2 philosophical movements of the Frankfurt School, French Post-Modernism & Critical Theory, helped form modern woke ideas. We'll also briefly explore its explosive rise in Obama's 2nd term and the reactionary cultural shift that led to its recent retreat from public, academic, corporate and state discourse. **About Marinos Maragos** Born in Western Sydney, I completed a Masters of Business Management in 2014 and worked for over 16 years with the universities, sourcing Australia's top performing graduates for some of the largest banking, finance, legal, insurance & tech conglomerates in the country. With on the ground insights to both the academic and private sector, I also run an entertainment business, working with a number of independent musicians & artists across Sydney & surrounds. **On the second Monday of the month, Philo Agora has a speaker on a philosophical topic and a Q&A and discussion after. On the fourth Monday we meet again for open philosophical discussion.** Philo Agora's format is a talk for 20 minutes starting at 7:15 for 7:30. The presenter then answers any questions of clarification from the floor. We then take a break of 5 minutes for more coffee and to mull over the talk and discuss it within small groups. The microphone is then passed around the audience for comment, opinion, and often counter argument to a maximum of 3 minutes. The presenter is then given a 5 minute right of reply. We usually finish up at 9pm. The cover charge is $5 for the talk. There are tea and coffee facilities available in-house. Sam Alexander - Convener (0457 749 310)

Board Games in a Bar. Someone Had To

The Art Syndicate's weekly games night has been running for over two years. The regulars keep coming back. That's the whole story, really. Come as you are. **If you've got $10 to spend at the bar, that's what keeps the collection growing**. A wine, a beer, something non-alcoholic, and you're set for the night. **If money's tight, just show up. We'd rather have you in the room.** **External food is welcome.** For the after-work crowd, we often end up eating together anyway. Lisa and Saxon know the collection inside out. Tell them what you're after, something fast and social, a deep strategy game, or you've never touched a board game in your life, and you'll be sorted in five minutes. We've got titles that'll become new favourites and rare gems for the dedicated gamers. The room fills up with people who came once and never stopped coming back. Solo, with friends, or somewhere in between, it works either way. Come find out why. 🎲 Come find out why. **🎲 What's on the table** **Party & social** Coyote · Exploding Kittens · Ghost Court · Here to Slay · Monikers · Munchkin · No Ducks Given · Sushi Go · Telestrations · Trolley Problem · Uno: No Mercy · A Fake Artist Goes to New York **Social deduction** Blood on the Clocktower · Codenames · Coup **Strategy** Arcs · Carcassonne · Catan · Railroads · Sidereal Confluence · Ticket to Ride: Europe **Mystery & investigation** Awkward Guests · Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective · This Game is Killer: Frozen Horrors **Co-op** Magic Maze · Pandemic Legacy · Puzzle Box **Team** Captain Sonar **Classics** Cards · Chess · Scrabble *Want something specific? Ticket to Ryde

Gaming Meetups Ticket to Ryde (T2R) holds an open, social tabletop gaming meetup on Wednesdays, from 6:30pm until late. This includes all sorts of board games, card games, dice games, etc. (see the Games We Play section below for more details). We typically meet at the West Ryde Hotel (corner Victoria Road, Chatham Road & Dickson Lane). You'll find us hanging out in the Function Room, affectionately referred to as the Fish Bowl. If you enter from Dickson Lane, walk up the steps to the beer garden area and we'll be immediately on your right. On occasion, we may be forced to meet at another venue, so double check the forums on our Board Game Geek (BGG) webpage for the latest. Everyone is welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. The hotel's function room and amenities are ambulant disability accessible, however, please be aware our alternate venues may not be. While there is no cost to attend, we're encouraged to support the hotel by purchasing food from the bistro and drinks from the bar. Many like to arrive early to order and eat dinner in the function room, before the gaming begins. Public transport, walking or cycling are ideal ways to travel to and from the venue. If driving, parking is available in the surrounding streets - be sure to check for any sign-posted parking restrictions. More information about the venue can be found on the West Ryde Hotel website.
