Mesmerized: The Lasting Legacy of an 18th-Century Health Fad
Sun, Oct 18, 6:00 PMYou probably know what it feels like to be mesmerized. What you might not know is that the word comes from a wild, 18th-Century health fad that swept Europe, featuring a cast of history's most famous characters. But this story is more than a fascinating historical anecdote. It's a timeless reminder of just how easily our minds can be tricked. We carry access to all of humanity’s knowledge—and nonsense—in our pockets, making today's real challenge separating fact from noise. After spending decades in the college biology classroom, **Melanie Trecek-King** created Thinking Is Power—a twist on "knowledge is power"—to provide accessible tools that empower individuals to spot deceptive tactics and build the self-awareness needed to recognize their own vulnerabilities. Today, Trecek-King works with diverse audiences—including educators, business professionals, and cybersecurity experts—to help people think more clearly, avoid misinformation, and have more productive conversations. She creates and leads workshops that equip youth with media literacy skills, counter extremist narratives, and prevent online radicalization. She also designs engaging activities for educators to help students learn how misinformation works… by creating their own fun examples. Trecek-King teaches at Massasoit Community College, is a columnist for *Skeptical Inquirer*, and a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. **Admission: $10, or FREE for CFI Members.** Membership is $60/year. Spicy Dogs Club (East Hollywood)
Sun, Oct 11, 8:00 PM**🌶️🌶️🐾 Spicy Dogs Club – Real World Training Group** Led weekly by Shakinah from Tully’s Training Life doesn’t happen in a training class—it happens out in the world. This small group is designed to give reactive (“spicy”) dogs and their humans the chance to practice skills together in real-life settings, like moving through a busy market or park. You’ll get hands-on coaching, structured exercises, and the support of a community that understands. This location is **MEDIUM/HOT!** 🌶 🌶 Best for spicy dogs ready to level up their training around real-world distractions — think busy walkways, other leashed dogs, loud sounds, kids on the move, with some open spaces. This class is unique for our spicy clubs as we will have a rotating group of our talented Tully's trainers teaching this location. If your dog is working on being comfortable around new people, this class is for you! **Agenda:** * 👋 Welcome & introductions * 🎯 Structured reactivity exercises to build confidence and neutrality * 💬 Q&A + discussion: homework, common challenges, and shared strategies **What to Bring:** * 🐶 Your dog (on a secure, non-retractable leash and flat collar or harness) * 💧 Water for you and your pup * 🍖 A mix of treats (don’t forget some *high-value* ones for tough moments) * 🎒 Treat bag (super handy, but not required) **How to Find Us:** We'll meet at the far corner of the first parking lot you come to, then we will do a structured sniff walk up to a safe open space for training. If you are late or have trouble finding us please text or call Shakinah 406-366-4349 **Additional Info:** * You'll need to purchase one entry 'ticket' per dog. Cost is not per person. * You'll need to be approved by a TT team member before this class. We will reach out to you if needed. **Participant Waiver & Acknowledgment** By joining the **The Spicy Dogs Club**, you acknowledge and agree to the following: * Participation is voluntary and at your own risk. * **Tully’s Training, the Spicy Dogs Club, and any affiliated partners, sponsors, or venues** are not liable for any injuries, damages, or losses to you, your dog(s), or your property during the event. * You accept full responsibility for the behavior, safety, and control of your dog(s) at all times. * You confirm your dog is healthy, up to date on vaccinations, and does not pose a threat to other dogs or people. * By attending, you grant **Tully’s Training and the Spicy Dogs Club** permission to use any photos or videos taken during the event for marketing or promotional purposes. * You agree to receive event-related reminder emails and text messages and may be added to Tully’s Training’s mailing list for future updates—you can unsubscribe anytime. **Your participation in the Spicy Dogs Club constitutes your understanding and acceptance of this waiver.**

And while 15,000 or 20,000 steps would be great, they also require more time. So to make it fun and manageable, we’re starting with 10k steps as a challenge—and we may increase the goal in future events. **THE IMPORTANT POINTS ARE THESE;** Space is limited, so **please RSVP only if you’re 100% sure you’ll attend.** 🙏🏾If you RSVP and don’t show, you will be 🚩Red Flagged 🚩for future events—we all appreciate reliability and respect for others' abilities to get a spot to walk!🙏🏾 Expect to hit somewhere between **10,000–12,000 steps (approximately 7.5-9 miles),** depending on the pace and group. This **midweek walking event** is going really well. So, let’s **stay active together** and **make this a Strong part of our routine.** **See You There.** [COMMENT BELOW IF YOU ARE IN AGREEMENT] **NOW IS THE TIME, LET’S GET TO WALKING;** Btw. Yes, Lacy Park allows dogs. However, they must be on a leash and it will be your own responsibility. No running involved. Just a casual, social walk. Bring water if you need it. **Free street parking is available in the surrounding areas. Please avoid parking inside the park lot, as the gates may close before we finish our walk.** **Park closes at dusk so I strongly advise against parking inside any of the lots. Just drive around, and you can easily find free open parking spaces.** **Lacy Park is located at 1485 Virginia Road, San Marino, CA 91108**

Open Baseball Practice
Fri, Oct 9, 12:30 AM**Open Baseball Practice** Starting a casual group for anyone who wants to get some reps in; hitting, fielding, throwing, whatever people want to work on. All people, experience, and skill levels are welcome. No pressure, no tryouts, just showing up and playing ball. **When:** Thursday, October 8th, 6:00 PM **Where:** Glassell Park Recreation Center, 3650 Verdugo Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90065 **Bring:** Your own glove/bat/baseballs if you have any. I'm not a coach so I don't have an abundance of gear. There are two baseball / softball fields at Glassell Park Recreation Center that are never in use. I figured it's a safe bet to go there but I am open to meeting / moving to a different field. All are welcome! This is about finding some people to play ball with for fun.
